MANILA - The US and the Philippines are preparing to upgrade an airport and naval base near Taiwan, as the security allies boost defence posture amid tensions with China.

A fuel storage facility and command centre are being pitched in the Philippines’ Lal-lo Airport, also near Taiwan. “We are not just looking at how we can operate together more efficiently, but also we are looking at the future operations that we are going to conduct,” Lt-Gen Brawner told reporters. “All of these factors should come in as we decide on which projects we’re really going to pursue.”

The visit to the Philippine sites is also a prelude to a meeting between the US and Philippine military officials in Manila on Thursday to discuss ways to deepen security cooperation.
