US 'candy bomber' pilot Gail Halvorsen, dies at 101 Former US Pilot, Gail Halvorsen, who was nicknamed 'the candy bomber' for dropping off sweets for children in Berlin has died.

Halvorsen, pilot of the Berlin airlift, a spectacular humanitarian rescue mission amid the first major Cold War crisis between the West and Soviet Union, died at the age of 101, it was confirmed on 17 February 2022. A lifelong ambassador for German-American friendship, Halvorsen became famous in the embattled city as the first American pilot to drop bundles of chocolate and chewing gum from his plane to local youngsters waiting below.
