The township commissioners tabled a planned vote to solicit bids to demolish the Lambert farmhouse on McCormick Road, with a local preservationist presenting new options to move the structure.
The Lambert farmhouse along McCormick Road, whose fate has been the subject of much discussion after Upper Allen Township purchased the farmland in 2020 with plans to construct a new park.A proposed bid request to demolish the Lambert farmhouse was tabled Wednesday night by the Upper Allen Township commissioners in light of some new possibilities to preserve the historic structure.
Following a brief closed-door session to discuss the bid solicitation with their attorney, the township commissioners voted to table the demolition request and take another crack at other options. That bid was found non-viable under the township’s terms, given that Taylor’s offer was conditional on the township also selling him a parcel of land across McCormick Road from the farm to which he could relocate the house, which was not part of the bid request. He had offered $132,000 for such a deal, Taylor said Wednesday.
Taylor said Wednesday that he believed he could relocate the house to the land in question without running afoul of runoff regulations, and Martin said that, in consultation with the township engineer, the stormwater issue was “not insurmountable.” The majority of the area is shown being devoted to walking trails and picnic areas as well as some casual sports, like bocce or pickleball courts, along with an amphitheater area for concerts. The full buildout is estimated in the $15 million to $20 million range in a gradual process that might take many years, Martin said.
The township hired architect Doug Tilley last year to review the building, with Tilley finding that the original 1855 house built by the Lambert family does exist, albeit beneath a number of questionable renovations done more recently, including two large additions that date from the 1970s or 80s.
