“Hurricane Fiona didn’t spare our schools. Some were hit harder than others, and we know our schools are important places for children to learn, to grow and to gain skills that will shape them for the future,” McLane said in a speech before the legislature on Nov. 2. Sherwood Elementary School is set to be completed in fall 2024, while the Stratford High School is expected to be completed in fall 2025.The five-year $136.1-million budget for school renovations also includes plans to complete upgrades at Eliot River and Montague schools.
Social Development and Housing Minister Matthew MacKay has said the province needs to build 1,400 affordable housing units to meet the current need. An additional $25 million is pledged this year, bringing the total budget for the campus to $174 million. Green finance critic Hannah Bell said the province should be spending more on public housing construction than it does on road construction. Bell suggested many of the commitments in the province's 2022 capital budget could be"ignored or forgotten." - Stu Neatby
