UPDATED: One charged with murder in death of OPP officer, two others wounded in early morning 'ambush' in rural Bourget
Bourget residents were still coming to terms with the news of what happened on Thursday, many finding it difficult to believe such a devastating crime could occur on their streets.
Neighbour Madison Bach said she was shocked by the violence in the community of Bourget early on Thursday.Madison Bach, who lives in a semi-detached bungalow inside the cordoned-off area, said her husband thought he heard some noises shortly after 2 a.m., but didn’t investigate beyond taking a cursory look around their home.She noticed the police lights when she got up at around three to nurse her six-month-old daughter, but, with their curtains drawn, didn’t think much about it.
“It was like ‘pop, pop, pop!’” he said. “And then, about 20 minutes later, it was nothing but cop car after cop car.Bourget resident Robbyn Annett-Laub, a waitress at Ramigab Resto-Bar in Bourget, said she knew just about everyone in town, but she didn’t know the residents of the house where the shooting occurred.A few doors away, Robbyn Annett-Laub said she wasn’t awaken by the shots or ensuing sirens, but inexplicably woke up shortly after 3 a.m. and got out of bed to go lock her back door.
“But these things don’t happen here. If we hear what sounds like shots, it’s usually hunters or cars backfiring.” In a statement, Premier Doug Ford extended his thoughts to the family of Mueller, who he said was “senselessly killed in the line of duty.” It’s the latest deadly shooting to shake a police force in Ontario. Last weekend, the names of four officers killed last year were added to the Ontario Police Memorial as part of an annual remembrance ceremony.
