A fire that broke out at a Summerside apartment building on the evening of Sunday, Aug. 7 has displaced 11 people.SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — Four Summerside residents were rescued out of an apartment after a fire broke out in their building on the corner of Fitzroy and Summer streets.
The Summerside Fire Department, half a block from the residence, received the call around 11:15 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 7."We had to use our ladder truck and get them out the upstairs windows," said Fire Chief Ron Enman."There were a couple people on the roof, we had to rescue them."Firefighters were at the scene for around an hour and a half. The fire, though, was contained to one unit on the second storey.
"It could've been a pretty serious event," said Enman."I mean, any time there's a fire, it's a serious event, but it was a great effort by our members, for sure, getting those people out of third-storey windows. It could have been the other way really quick." After the fire was extinguished, the department had to find accommodations for 10 people and five pets.
As of the morning on Monday, Aug. 8, the cause of the fire was still under investigation and fire investigators were on the scene.
