Several power lines were blown down along Dorchester Street in Sydney on Saturday due to post-tropical storm Fiona. IAN NATHANSON/CAPE BRETON POSTSYDNEY — The mayor and council serving the Cape Breton Regional Municipality have declared a state of local emergency after post-tropical storm Fiona brought with it widespread power outages, road closures, displaced residents and structural damage.

"It is currently not safe to travel. Downed power lines and trees are a significant hazard. Please remain sheltered," the municipality said in a release. Meanwhile, Parks Canada is reporting that portions of the Cabot Trail are currently closed due to unsafe conditions caused by Fiona.
