Writer Sophia Beresiner – who is about to welcome her second child via surrogate – weighs in on the most divisive storyline from season three of TheKardashians: Khloé Kardashian struggling to bond with her baby.
have spoken to me in a way that no Kardashian storyline has ever done before. Opening up about how she feels less connected to her newborn son than she expected after a surrogate birth, the Good American founder explains: “I felt really guilty that this woman just had my baby, and I take the baby and go to another room, and you are separated… It felt like such a transactional experience… I wish someone was honest about surrogacy and the difference of it. But it doesn’t mean it is bad or good.
Still, even with all of the reassurance provided by our surrogate Rebecca – who was adamant that she was merely a temporary caretaker, and couldn’t wait to watch us bond with our child – I, like Khloé, worried intensely about witnessing another woman give birth, instinctively perceive the baby as her own, and then have to accept the baby as mine.
As we approached the birth of our daughter, I remember how surreal the absence of a bump felt, too. “I just don’t get it yet,” my husband would say, with mere days to go until the birth. “It feels more like we’re waiting to pick up a new cat than our baby.” I’d scoff at him, to diminish the point, while also acknowledging that he was exactly right.
