'As SAA managers and workers brace for impact, all that Numsa has is the spectacle of resistance. It is a performance staged as much for its own members as it is for the state,' writes Tom Eaton.
SA’s parliament has warned striking airline workers not to destroy their jobs, presumably because destroying jobs is parliament’s job.
At the timing of writing on Tuesday, the strike by SA Airways unions was going ahead although the prospect of a full shutdown was dwindling. This will be a relief to the airline: a grounded SAA would have lost R50m a day, a substantially higher figure than the R6m it has lost every day for the last 25 years.
The warning from parliament was stern but surprising. It remains unclear why the ruling party had decided not to give SAA another “bailout” to go with the R57bn already set on fire since 1994. After all, the country lost well over R100m every day during the decade of Zupta state capture, and I don’t recall any thrifty warnings from parliament back then...Simply register at no cost to proceed.
