But in recent years, rival Telemundo, a unit of Comcast Corp.’s NBCUniversal, gained ground with edgy narconovelas—soap operas about Mexican drug lords—aimed at a new generation of bilingual Latinos. To date, Univision’s board has yet to receive what it considers a satisfactory offer to acquire the company.

AT&T last year closed an $80-billion-plus deal for Time Warner and is building a streaming service.
