The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) is recommending the revocation of 36 University of Fort Hare honours degrees due to irregular admissions. The investigation uncovered widespread irregularities in the university's admissions process, impacting numerous students over a significant period.

A total of 36 University of Fort Hare honours students are facing the potential revocation of their qualifications. This follows an investigation by the Special Investigating Unit ( SIU ) which uncovered irregularities in their admission to the university.

The SIU, authorized by President Cyril Ramaphosa in 2019 to probe the university's affairs, received allegations of maladministration within the department of public administration, including the awarding of honours degrees, fund management, and the sourcing of public servants for study. \Mike Koya, the SIU head in the Eastern Cape, briefed the Higher Education Portfolio Committee on Friday, revealing that 68 students were admitted irregularly between 2006 and 2019, failing to comply with admission requirements. Six students in 2007 were admitted without meeting minimum requirements or undergoing the recognition of prior learning (RPL) process. Seven students were admitted after initially enrolling in non-accredited certificates, while 20 students were retrospectively approved for RPL in 2015. \The SIU has initiated a process to refer these cases to the University of Fort Hare council and senate for qualification revocation. While 36 students are recommended for revocation, 26 are either not qualified or deceased. The investigation continues, with the SIU seeking to amend the proclamation to encompass allegations from the faculties of law, public administration, and health regarding students registered for LLB degrees despite not meeting admission requirements. Other allegations include irregular payments to 10 service providers for infrastructure maintenance, a service provider colluding with officials in the procurement of CCTV cameras installed at officials' residences, and contracts for student residences and the management of National Student Fund Aid Scheme funds
