Wilkerson will sign copies of her book “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents,” following her speech. Published in 2020, “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents” shares the struggle the U.S. has experienced due to slavery and its lasting impact on modern society. In the book, Wilkerson shares stories of real people whose lives have been shaped by what she calls a “hidden caste system” that negatively affects the trajectory of human lives.

The Rethinking Race programming includes films, performances, conversations and keynote speakers to engage students and the Akron community with topics in social justice, diversity, equity and inclusion. This year’s programming focuses on colorism and its impact on the human experience in the 21st century, according to the university.
