Universal Is Attempting The Dark Universe Again (But This Time It Won’t Fail)

Universal tried building a movie universe of monsters beginning with 2017's The Mummy, and though that failed, Renfield is the perfect launching pad.

Renfield is a fun standalone horror comedy, but several Easter eggs hint at Universal giving another monster cinematic universe a shot, only this time it could work. The new movie sees the titular familiar attempting to escape his life serving Dracula in order to lead a more normal life in New Orleans. But it escalates into a satisfyingly bloody, vulgar, and squirmish affair.

Renfield Subtly Sets Up A New Monsters Cinematic Universe Renfield is full of Universal Monster Easter eggs that could simply be fun references, but they could just as likely be laying the groundwork for a much bigger universe than just a Renfield 2 or a Dracula spin-off, which Cage has alluded to. The most notable hint of an expanded universe is the Lobos crime family.
