Three second-half goals lift Americans to victory over Canada in first of 107 matches featuring 30 teams

Team USA is the top seed in the World Lacrosse Championship, and the defending champs played like it en route to a 7-5 victory over No. 2 seed Canada on Wednesday night at Snapdragon Stadium. As expected in a game featuring the top two seeds, the play was tight. Neither team took control as they traded goals throughout a first half which ended in a 4-4 draw.Brennan O’Neill, who just completed his junior season at Duke under Team USA head coach John Danowski and is the only U.S.

“I’m surprised but not surprised, if that makes any sense,” Danowksi said of O’Neill’s hat trick. “I’ve seen him show it , but this is a different stage so very impressive. He came up big for us.”By that point, Canada was left scrambling and committed several penalties while desperately looking to gain possession from the patient and controlled Americans.

“The rules in this tournament are so tough if you fall behind, with no shot clock and other team just being able to control the ball and burn clock like we did,” Rob Pannell said. “And we have the best face-off guys in the world, so they were in a tough spot.” The match was the first of 107 games that will be played over the course of 11 days as 30 teams vie to be labeled world champion. The busy stretch continues with a game Saturday against Haudenosaunee and Sunday against England.
