Ontario patients wait an average 2.1 hours to be initially seen by a doctor. At the General campus of The Ottawa Hospital, patients wait 3.6 hours, the fourth-longest wait time in the province. Hawkesbury and District Hospital had the longest waits, an average of 4.6 hours to be seen by a doctor. In addition, Eastern Ontario has seen a high number of temporary emergency department closures since earlier this summer. Five regional hospitals — an unprecedented number — have been forced to temporarily close their emergency departments due to critical staffing shortages in recent weeks. Those hospitals are in Perth, Kemptville, Carleton Place and Alexandria, in addition to Montfort in Ottawa. The union warned that such closures will intensify under the province’s current approach.

Paramedics are also struggling to keep up, said Carrie Lynn Poole-Cotnam, secretary-treasurer of CUPE Local 503.Article content
