In a speech to the French senate on Thursday, King Charles will discuss the importance of tackling climate change, as part of a trip which is heavy with environmental themes
The King still has a “positive story” to tell on the UK’s battle against climate change, experts say.
As a member of the EU, France’s target for banning the sale of new petrol and diesel cars is 2035, the same as Mr Sunak’s new deadline, so there is unlikely to be any criticism from President Macron of this new date. Dr Craig Prescott, an expert on the monarchy, said it was “inevitable” that the issue of climate change would come up in discussions between the King and Macron, as it is a “key theme” of the state visit.
He added: “The programme includes a ‘sustainability reception for British and French business leaders, to hear more about their plans to invest to protect biodiversity and combat climate change’, so it seems inevitable that at some point, the King and the President will talk about their respective countries’ commitment to net zero.“In this sense, it’s unfortunate timing for the King for all this to blow up this week.
“The King could make the point that the argument in Britain is about the pace of transition rather than the principle of transition. As far as we know, it seems that despite developments this week, it will still be the law under the Climate Change Act that the government must achieve net zero by 2050.”
