We must be as clear as possible about what is anti-Semitism and what it is not, so that real political differences are not transformed into existential confrontations. This is not always easy to do, but it is necessary nonetheless.
I am no expert on the topic of anti-Semitism—though few of those currently holding forth on the topic can claim expertise, and some who claim it might better be described as experts in special pleading.But I am a Jewish-American political science professor who writes about American and world politics and has taught at one of the country’s major public universities, Indiana University, for almost four decades.
Most of the clamor about “anti-Semitism” on American campuses today is not about hatred of Jews or violence against Jews. It is about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and the range of emotional, intellectual, and political responses to it...Such statements simply do not describe or judge or even reference Jewish people or “the Jewish people” .
