To reach the College World Series for the third straight year, unseeded Texas will again have to go on the road and beat a nationally seeded Stanford team that's teeming with talent.
Texas pitcher Lucas Gordon and the Longhorns face another challenge on the road against Stanford in the Super Regionals.AUSTIN — Texas entered this season with the same lofty expectations this program has grown accustomed to. But internally, the Longhorns knew this could be a bumpier ride than in year’s past.
The Longhorns have delivered in all those regards during coach David Pierce’s seventh season at the helm. And with two wins in this week’s NCAA tournament super regionals against No. 8 national seed Stanford at Sunken Diamond, they’ll be able to book that flight back to Omaha, Nebraska. “This team is very gratifying. For one, they created the identity for the 2023 team. They’ve been in the shadows of the ’21, ’22 teams. They’ve heard all about those players. And now they’ve been able to create their own identity and it’s been huge for their confidence.”Texas began the year 0-3 at the College Baseball Showdown at Arlington’s Globe Life Field back in February.
“After that series, it was a tough week at practice,” Texas junior outfielder Dylan Campbell said. “It was like a reality check. We kind of stepped back and reassess where we were as a team. And moving forward, we took some of those feelings of embarrassment and used it to fuel us for the rest of the year.”
