The final assessment of the probe says the violence may amount to crimes against humanity.

The United Nations has warned of renewed violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo unless Kinshasa takes steps to ease tensions and resentment between two communities involved in bloody clashes at the end of last year, before the end of March elections in western DRC.

The final assessment of the UN probe into the events of December 16-18 said the violence may amount to crimes against humanity. The attacks were characterised by their extreme violence and speed, leaving little time for people to escape as Batende villagers armed with firearms, including hunting rifles, machetes, bows and arrows, and gasoline launched their assaults on their opponents after the victims had been confirmed as ethnic Banunus.
