Israel defends its raid on a Gaza hospital, citing 'irrefutable evidence' of militant use, while the UN human rights chief calls the justification unsubstantiated and the WHO calls for the release of the hospital's detained director. Despite Israel's claims, the UN rights chief and the WHO demand independent investigations into the incident.
United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk appears in a video link to brief the first meeting of the UN Security Council of 2025 on the situation in the Middle East including the Palestinian question at UN headquarters in New York City, US, on Jan 3, 2025.
Turk told the UN Security Council on Friday that Israel did not "substantiate many of these claims, which are often vague and broad. In some cases, they appear to be contradicted by publicly available information." "We suspect him of being a Hamas operative as hundreds of Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorists were hiding inside the Kamal Adwan Hospital under his management. He is currently being investigated by Israeli security forces," Miller said.
