🇺🇦 A year on from the Bucha massacre, a Ukrainian women has told of how her family were forced to shelter in a basement for six days, and President Zelensky vowed to “never forget or forgive” the invasion 🔴 RachelMullerH reports
“I heard military planes above us and saw the roads lining up with tanks. I saw cars set alight. We were hiding under piles of suitcases in the car, as my father had been told that we had to cover ourselves up to avoid being shot at.”
Ms Lanovaya’s father was desperate for news of when they could leave. “It was like torture. One minute we were told it was safe to get out of there, the next it was not.” Once they heard they were safe to go, they quickly headed to Mukachevo in Western Ukraine. Five months ago, Ms Lanovaya’s family were told it was safe to go home. “I was so happy. There is nowhere like home in the world. Friday marked one year since the discovery of the bodies of 441 civilians in Bucha, according to a report by the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe . Kyiv says more than 1,400 people were killed in Bucha during the occupation including 37 children, more than 175 people were found in mass graves and torture chambers, and 9,000 Russian war crimes have been identified.
Events in Bucha have been seen as a bleak symbol of the scale of Russia’s aggression throughout the conflict.and a horror that burns the soul… We will never forgive.
