A Ukrainian refugee who arrived earlier this year is getting a second life here in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Serhii Kuper left his home for Canada before the war, fearing that Russia was soon going to invade Ukraine. It was a tough decision, but knowing his safety would be in jeopardy, Kuper had no choice but to leave. He says it was very important for him to go to a place where he felt welcomed. He has not once felt like a stranger since arriving in St. John’s.

Now working with the Association for New Canadians, Kuper enjoys giving back and helping people who are arriving from his home country. “It is my honour,” he says. “I told myself when I settled and got on my feet, I should volunteer and help out other people.”
