Ukrainian newcomer to perform with gifted violin at Calgary fundraiser yyc
“I was so broken — I thought maybe my life is over and maybe I will never play again because it was too emotional.While staying with family in Calgary, Lykhorstova started playing the piano, reconnecting with music and beginning the healing process.
“When my Ukrainian violin arrived — it’s just everything about Ukraine, it’s too much, too many flashbacks. I was like, I can’t play on my Ukrainian violin so now I have new life, new violin, so that’s why we switched our instruments. I think it’s like part of my life and part of my heart, and I was ready to share it with others.”
The Calgary-based stringed instrument craftsman, or luthier, has been making instruments for five decades. He made his first violin at age 10, and since then has won awards for his creations and taught as a university professor for 30 years.Article content
