Mayor Brian Bigger and Sudbury MP Viviane Lapointe join dozens of members of the city’s Ukrainian community to celebrate that country’s independence day in the shadow of the Russian invasion
A ceremony to mark the 31st anniversary of Ukraine's independence was held at Sudbury's Tom Davies Square on Aug. 24 with the singing of the Ukraine national anthem and raising the Ukraine National Flag.
"At that moment, Ukraine became the independent country that it is, free from the shackles of the Soviet Union. Thirty-one years later, we are standing here to celebrate that event. But our celebration has a more sombre tone this year. Knowing that Ukrainians are dying to defend that hard-won freedom of our ancestral homeland," said Martyn.
Greater Sudbury Mayor Brian Bigger also spoke to the gathering and mentioned the importance of recognizing all cultures, traditions and languages. Bigger said seeing the house gave him a sense of appreciation for the fact that he is a first-generation Canadian living in Sudbury, a community that is welcoming.
