The designer behind Lenny Kravitz’s Grammys look on why the fashion community needs to continue supporting Ukraine.
The choice to wear a Ukrainian-born designer was particularly poignant, considering that Kravitz is part Ukrainian on his father’s side. “Lenny has many friends from Ukraine,” Fedner, who is now based in LA, tells. “While I was working on [the] look, he spoke to me about how some of his friends had been able to get out [of the country] and asked me about my family and friends.”
Over the past six weeks, Fedner has been busy rallying to support those affected by the war in her birth country, which she herself left as a refugee when she was just five. “We came over [to the US] as religious refugees,” she explains. “When the crisis in Ukraine [began], it was particularly shocking because I actually hadn’t been back to Ukraine until two years ago.”to hold a fashion show in the capital city of Kyiv, leading her to build close relationships with the fashion community there.
Since the war began, the designer has been working with her local community in LA to help support those affected by the war, including organising anat the end of March, as well as amplifying calls for help among those on the ground in Ukraine. “I’ve always supported organisations [helping] refugees, but in this situation, it’s not abstract – I know [people’s] names and their families, and where they live. I’ve visited the places that are being bombed,” she explains.
For Fedner, the memory of the kindness that she received as a refugee all those years ago spurs her on to help those who are now in need. “[That] kindness is not something that you easily forget,” she concludes. “It’s so important that people continue to help.”
