The number who have left since the start of the war is unclear, but by early October, some local media had reported that as many as 700,000 fled following the September announcement of a mobilisation drive to call up as many as 300,000 to fight. Russia's 13% personal income tax is deducted automatically by domestic employers.
By mid-November, Ukrainian forces retook Kherson city - the region's administrative centre - and a number of settlements in the region. The attacks on critical infrastructure have left residents without electricity and have resulted in power outages.Ukrainian forces on the frontline are also taking part in Christmas Eve festivities. Vladimir Putin has said the group does not represent Russia, but that private military contractors have the right to work anywhere in the world as long as they do not break Russian law.
Mr Zelenskyy, who was stood outside surrounded by lights and a Christmas tree, said Ukrainians will make a wish.
