Ukraine’s foreign minister has slapped down Emmanuel Macron after he said it was vital not to ‘humiliate’ Russia over its illegal invasion.
The French president said it will be important to spare Russia a crushing defeat to preserve the possibility of ‘building an exit ramp through diplomatic means’ once the fighting stops.
‘Because it is Russia that humiliates itself. We all better focus on how to put Russia in its place. This will bring peace and save lives.’ The pair have spoken regularly as part of efforts to achieve a ceasefire and begin a credible negotiation between Kyiv and Moscow, although he has had no tangible success to show for it.
