Greeted in Downing Street by a large crowd of cheering aides and supporters after formally accepting the King’s invitation to become prime minister, Starmer’s first address made the case for a moderate politics to repair voters’ broken trust. “I have just returned from Buckingham Palace, where I accepted an invitation from his Majesty the King, to form the next government of this great nation,” he told the crowds outside number 10, now his new residence.
Starmer thanked outgoing Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, acknowledging his “achievement” as the first British Asian UK leader, paying tribute to the “extra effort” that entailed. The Labour Party on Friday surged to a landslide victory in a parliamentary election, ending 14 years of often tumultuous Conservative government.
