The UK Government has imposed sanctions against a high-ranking Iranian official after British-Iranian national Alireza Akbari was executed 🔴 Rishi Sunak called the execution a ‘callous and cowardly act, carried out by a barbaric regime’
News that former Iranian defence official Mr Akbari had been executed emerged on Saturday despite last-minute appeals from the UK Government for him to be spared.
On Wednesday Mr Akbari’s wife Maryam told the BBC she had been invited to a “final meeting” at the Iranian prison where her husband was being held in solitary confinement. “The Iranian regime must be held accountable for its flagrant breaches of human rights. All death sentences must be quashed,” he wrote on Twitter.Our thoughts are with his family at this time of immense grief.
“We need to see UK officials doing their utmost to investigate allegations that Alireza was tortured and pursuing all avenues to hold those responsible in Iran to account.
