Orphan Umay Bozok sadly lost her whole family in the recent earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. Now a close family friend of the 2-year-old has exclusively spoken to Metro about the appeal to bring her to London to start afresh 👇

Umay Bozok managed to crawl out of the rubble after her family home was destroyed in the earthquakes which hit Turkey and Syria

The toddler’s mother is thought to have survived the initial impact and somehow freed her daughter, who was found by rescuers after waiting through the night near the rubble of her home. Emin, 37, told Metro.co.uk: ‘The rescuers were trying to save Umay’s family but unfortunately they did not survive and they were pulled out one by one from under the rubble. Umay was under the rubble but we think she was somehow freed by her mother and that’s why she was able to crawl out at night and wait until the morning when she was found by rescuers.

The death toll from the disaster currently stands at 41,000, with tens of thousands of people still missing and survivors living in tent cities. ‘Considering her father and brother died immediately, it’s a miracle she survived. But now Umay faces a tough situation in a region where thousands of people are waiting to get access to clean water and shelter and even adults are struggling tremendously.
