Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron spent the day hitting the phones in a bid to calm tensions amid fears over the potentially global consequences of Iran’s first ever direct assault on Israeli soil. Government sources insisted the involvement of British Typhoons was an action to calm, rather than provoke, tensions as Iran’s projectiles would have caused massive loss of life and potentially triggered war had they not been intercepted.
A Government source confirmed on Sunday that “political and diplomatic dialogues in the region are ongoing”, adding: “We are very keen to de-escalate while acknowledging that Israel has a right to self defence.”
