Didier Deschamps made a total of seven changes from the 1-1 draw against Croatia, as Karim Benzema and Antoine Griezmann were restored to the attack as the reigning champions looked for their first win.
The world champions were made to rue those missed openings as Ralf Rangnick's charges took the lead in the 37th minute as Andreas Weimann turned home Konrad Laimer's cross.Austria nearly doubled their lead four minutes before the halftime break, as Marko Arnautovic skipped past one challenge before firing straight at Hugo Lloris from close range.
Deschamps responded with a double change for the final 25 minutes, with Kylian Mbappe and Matteo Guendouzi replacing Griezmann and Aurélien Tchouameni.
