The Western Cape High Court has granted the University of Cape Town an interim court order barring protesting students from participating in or inciting others to participate in, any unlawful conduct.
Unlawful conduct includes disrupting academic activities, demonstrating or inciting violent conduct, preventing anyone from accessing campuses, and other actions.The interim order was issued on 17 February 2023, and it interdicted members of the Student Representative Council as well as those planning to engage in illegal behaviour.
The order forbids students from inciting violence, destroying or damaging university property in any way, or defacing university property. It also prevents them from restricting access to roads, buildings, and public transportation within the precinct. Following days of protests at the university, which forced it to temporarily suspend face-to-face classes, the university approached the court.
