UCLA bioengineers create thin, flexible neck device translating larynx muscle movements into audible speech.

The device, slightly larger than one square inch, offers hope for individuals with impaired vocal cords to restore their voice function.Speaking can frequently be challenging or impossible for those with voice abnormalities, including those who have pathological vocal cord illnesses or are recuperating after procedures for laryngeal cancer.

With the aid of machine learning technology, the device can interpret signals from a person’s moving laryngeal muscles into audible speech with approximately 95 percent accuracy. A machine-learning algorithm then translates these electrical data into speech signals. These speech impulses are transformed into the intended voice expression by the other, an actuation component.induction layer composed of copper induction coils and a layer of biocompatible silicone compound polydimethylsiloxane, or PDMS, with elastic characteristics. A fifth layer, which creates a magnetic field, is positioned in between the other two components and contains PDMS combined with micromagnets.

The device’s usability is aided by its dimensions, which are only 1.2 inches in diameter on each side, weigh around 7 grams, and are only 0.06 inches thick. Biocompatible double-sided tape is readily applied to the neck near the voice chords and can be reused by reapplying the tape as needed.
