Uber has launched a new pilot program in Johannesburg , introducing Uber Moto, a motorbike ride-hailing service aimed at tackling traffic congestion and offering a more affordable and time-efficient transportation option. The service, currently operating in parts of the city's western CBD, allows passengers to book rides starting at just R18, with helmets provided for safety. Each ride accommodates a single passenger, ensuring a comfortable and secure journey.
Cassie Jaganyi, head of communications at Uber South Africa, explained that the pilot project seeks to bridge transportation gaps in areas with limited coverage by providing an efficient alternative to traditional ride-hailing services. Preliminary feedback suggests that Uber Moto has been well-received, with trip costs approximately half the price of an UberGo for comparable distances. As part of the pilot program, Uber has emphasized the integration of its comprehensive safety features, including rigorous driver screening processes and readily accessible emergency assistance, to guarantee a secure ride experience for all passengers. This marks Uber's first foray into motorbike ride-hailing in South Africa, although the company has successfully implemented similar services in cities like Bangkok, Rio de Janeiro, Cairo, Lagos, and Bengaluru
