Uber Eats in SA misled about ordering from more than one place, says advertising regulator.

Uber Eats in South Africa misled customers into thinking it’s possible to order food from multiple restaurants in a single order.

In a recent television advert, the food delivery service features a group of four friends celebrating a birthday and then deciding to order food. The four friends all want different types of foods, from a cheese burger with a sparkler on top to Thai green curry. The ARB ruling said this creates the perception that customers can order food from multiple restaurants in one go.

In its defence, Uber Eats said that the friends voice what they would like to eat. Only one person is actually seen opening the app “The intention of the advertisements is to show that multiple types of food are available on the Uber Eats app. Users can either order such foods from several different vendors/restaurants in different orders, or several types of food from one, as many restaurants may also provide the user with various food choices from a single restaurant,” Uber Eats said.

“In all of our current advertisements, the scenes do not explicitly depict a person completing an order ... through the Uber Eats App. Rather, the advertisements depict individuals saying their orders, one person opening the app, and orders arriving, and thereafter, the various groups enjoying their various meals.”
