Former ESPN analyst and Tennessee high school coach Trent Dilfer was introduced as UAB’s new head football coach Wednesday. “I’m not hiring a high school football coach. I’m hiring the No. 6 pick in the NFL Draft.” — Athletic Director Mark Ingram

Staff members also had no idea what could happen.Dilfer’s name began to trickle out Tuesday night. He and UAB hoped to keep it under wraps until after Thursday, when Dilfer’s Lipscomb Academy will play in a Tennessee state championship game.
“We will learn to recruit at an elite level,” he said. “I’d be lying if I told you I know how to recruit at an elite level. That would be crap. That would be a lie. I’ve never done it. But we’re about to get really good at it. I’ll hire people that have been great at it in the past.”It was easy to see how Dilfer talked his way into the job, as the former ESPN NFL analyst is a good public speaker, something he was aware of at the podium. “I will hire people that have figuredout-ness. Yes, I made up that word. I think I made it up on TV one night when I was tired at ESPN and people laughed. I want people that can figure stuff out. I consider myself someone that can figure stuff out.”
