WCA Regina’s CEO Melissa Coomber-Bendtsen said her organization has been forced to turn away an “alarming amount of women” from their shelters due to the lack of capacity.
Nationally, the rate of intimate partner violence was 461 per 100,000 in urban areas and 985 per 100,000 in rural areas. “We’re looking for the federal government to increase the amount of money and recommit dollars into the national housing stream for women. In some communities it’s certainly about adding more shelters,” she said.
“We recently started emergency pet-friendly shelter spaces and it’s been difficult to find sustainable funding to maintain that service, and SOFIA House has Second Stage pet-friendly shelter spaces,” Taylor said.
