U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi lands in Taiwan as China's threaten serious consequences over the visit
The Associated PressU.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is shown touring the parliament house in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, earlier on Tuesday. Pelosi's Asian trip has included speculation of a stop in Taiwan, which would escalate tensions between the U.S. and China. The plane carrying Pelosi and her delegation took off from a Malaysian air force base and landed in Taipei on Tuesday night just before 11 p.m. local time.
Premier Su Tseng-chang didn't explicitly confirm Pelosi's visit, but said Tuesday that "any foreign guests and friendly lawmakers" are "very much welcome." Our visit is one of several Congressional delegations to Taiwan – and it in no way contradicts longstanding United States policy, guided by the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, U.S.-China Joint Communiques and the Six Assurances."The U.S. and Taiwan have colluded to make provocations first, and China has only been compelled to act out of self-defence," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying told reporters Tuesday in Beijing.
Shortly before Pelosi was due to arrive, Chinese state media said Chinese SU-35 fighter jets were "crossing" the Taiwan Strait, the body of water that separates mainland China and Taiwan. It wasn't immediately clear where they were headed or what they planned to do.
