Imagine if U.S. Reps. Scott Perry, Summer Lee, and U.S. Sen. John Fetterman had actually succeeded in derailing the process to increase the debt ceiling.

When the House and Senate voted to raise the debt limit this week, they assured that the United States of America would pay its bills and stave off an international economic calamity. The bill that allowed for the debt ceiling increase also allowed for some caps on discretionary spending that the House Republicans wanted. The legislation was a compromise in which neither side got everything they wanted both sides could claim a win.

Despite that clear language, and despite a marathon negotiation between the president and the Speaker of the House that produced a reasonable if not perfect product, those who voted no chose to grandstand on the subject. Democrats protected their most important objectives and minimized the impact of the spending cuts. For his part, Speaker McCarthy won caps on non-military spending, approval of some energy projects, and stronger work requirements for federal food program recipients.

While Speaker McCarthy may not ever gain control of the far-right faction of his caucus, he was savvy enough to out-maneuver them for the country’s good.
