U.S. Rep. Colin Allred of Dallas became the frontrunning Democrat in Tuesday's primary to select the party's nominee to take on U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz in November.

Democratic party U.S. Senate candidate Colin Allred addresses supporters alongside his wife Alexandra Eber during a primary election watch party on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, in Dallas. With 62% of polling locations reporting as of 10:56 p.m., Allred had won 58.92% of the vote. Gutierrez had 17.06%.Avoiding a May runoff allows Allred to focus exclusively on a November contest against incumbent U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, whom national Democrats see as one of this cycle’s most vulnerable Senate Republicans.

His most significant competition, Gutierrez, criticized Allred’s emphasis on compromise as wishy-washy happy talk not suited to the hardball of today’s partisan battles. Gutierrez campaigned as a principled warrior who would unapologetically take the fight to Republicans and beat them.“Democrats are willing to nominate a moderate if they think that they can beat somebody who they really dislike,” said Brandon Rottinghaus, professor of political science at the University of Houston.

Primary candidates have a significant advantage when they are able to start early and demonstrate strong fundraising. Sherman portrayed his candidacy as a call for moral leadership, saying voters want someone who can rise above political bickering. But his campaign never got traction, and he was trailing far behind Allred and Gutierrez in Tuesday’s results.

They had different views on health care, with Gutierrez backing a “Medicare for all” approach for those who want it. Allred instead promoted other steps to improve access.
