The U.S. has imposed sanctions on five senior Ugandan officials over accusations of involvement in corruption or human rights abuses. The entry ban comes just a month after the UK also announced similar sanctions against the leader of the national assembly and two ex-ministers. The U.S.

Mary Goretti Kitutu and Agnes Nandutu, previously ministers responsible for Uganda's isolated and impoverished border region of Karamoja, and former state minister for finance Amos Lugolobi were also named. Kitutu and Nandutu are accused of stealing roofing materials destined for the poor under a government-funded project and redirecting them to politicians and their families.

In addition, Peter Elwelu, former deputy chief of the Ugandan Peoples' Defense Forces , has been sanctioned"due to his involvement in gross violations of human rights", he said. The U.S. also places under sanctions Among's and Goretti's husbands Moses Hashim Magogo and Michael George Kitutu, respectively, and Lugolobi's wife, Evelyne Nakimera, who will not be allowed entry into the U.S.
