The Trump administration failed to conduct effective coronavirus screenings of airline passengers entering the United States from Italy and South Korea in early March, when cases of the virus were multiplying, a U.S. House of Representatives subcommittee said on Thursday.

“The administration lost critical time it could have used to prepare and build up capacity to mitigate,” Krishnamoorthi, who chairs the subcommittee on economic and consumer policy, said in a statement. The Democratic-majority House has voted to create a separate committee of lawmakers to police the Trump administration’s coronavirus response, but it has not yet gotten off the ground; Republicans only named their members on Thursday.
