The recent news that the United States’ forthcoming electric vehicle rebate will apply to all North American-made models and not just those made in the U.S. had some Canadian politicos jumping with joy. But beyond this diplomatic win, energy economists and environmental policy experts say there’s a larger takeaway here: Canada needs to take a hard look at its own plan for green energy transition and scale up.
The rebate, which could be as much as US$7,500 for American buyers, is expected to accelerate the production of electric vehicles and add jobs in Canada to keep up with U.S. demand.
