U.S. Army soldiers based out of the Yakima Training Center rescued a climber from Mount Adams on Wednesday.
YAKIMA, Wash. -- U.S. Army soldiers based out of the Yakima Training Center rescued a climber from Mount Adams on Wednesday.
Soldiers say the mission started when a climber was injured and her partner sent a message to the Yakima County Sheriff's Office . After they determined a ground rescue would not be possible due to the terrain, the 16th Combat Aviation Brigade performed an aeromedical evacuation. Federal support was requested through the Washington State Emergency Operations Center for a high-powered helicopter with hoist capability to recover the stranded civilian.
“The patient was at almost 7,000 feet on a 30-degree slope, but the visibility was excellent, and the winds were manageable,” said CW2 Terry Wald, the pilot in command of the mission. She had a severe leg injury and was transported to MultiCare Memorial Hospital in Yakima, they said.
