Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Health Secretary Matt Hancock have now tested positive for the coronavirus

AFP via Getty Images: Both figures at the centre of Britain's response to coronavirus have now tested positive for the disease: Prime Minister Boris Johnson andannounced separately on Friday that they have developed"mild symptoms."

He added: “I am now self-isolating, but I will continue to lead the government’s response via videoconference as we fight this virus. Together we will beat this #StayHomeSaveLives.” Both Johnson and Hancock have delivering daily briefings to the nation on the government’s coronavirus response, alongside Britain's Chief Scientific Officer and Chief and Deputy Medical Officers.

The 55-year-old leader is expecting a child with his partner, Carrie Symonds, later this year. It is not known whether she has caught the virus.one week earlier than scheduled this week, amid concerns that coronavirus could sweep through Westminster and spread between lawmakers.
