Some of us (myself included) are lucky to find that many aspects of our day-to-day work are both Type One and Type Two fun.

If you're an outdoor enthusiast, you may have heard of 'Type One and Type Two fun.' Likely first expressed in 1985 by University of Alaska geology professor Rainer Newberry , Type One fun includes things that are fun while you're doing them — going to a great concert with friends, riding a roller coaster, making cookies with your kids. Type Two fun is something that is often difficult while you are doing it, but is fun in retrospect.

Thinking of it as Type Two work, however, can make it more satisfying in the long run.Some of us are lucky to find that many aspects of our day-to-day work are both Type One and Type Two fun. As a physician, seeing patients is deeply satisfying both while I am doing it and in retrospect. And, while much of our work in healthcare is very stressful, it is stress that has a purpose.
