Tyler Reddick wins NASCAR at IMS road course over penalized Ross Chastain.
Tyler Reddick was the best driver in the best car at today's NASCAR race on the Indianapolis road course. He started on pole, routinely fought back through traffic on other strategies, and his win was never really in doubt other than on some wild double file restarts. All of that was pretty straightforward, which makes what happened behind him in the closing laps all the more absurd.
NASCAR mandates double file restarts in all races and two-lap overtime periods whenever possible, ignoring that both rules are problematic at a road course like Indianapolis that begins with a tight right-hander after a long, wide straight. That made each of the day's restarts a predictable sort of mess, with drivers routinely spinning in four-wide attempts to gain every position possible in the track's easiest passing zone.
The day's first overtime restart led to second-place Chase Elliott being spun behind leader Reddick and former series champion Joey Logano causing even more carnage by attempting to take the field five-wide on the inside runoff from the sharp corner. That meant the result of the second restart had become all but inevitable, and the predictable outcome occurred. Second-place Ryan Blaney was spun hard in the same area, creating a small pile-up behind Reddick again.
