The South African musician's star power has been confirmed beyond all reasonable doubt
Tyla Laura Seethal-dance sensation. Materialising in the hazy, sun-drenched days of late July 2023, the tune felt like a summer smash in reverse – a bittersweet banger powered by aching grooves and Tyla’s wistful voice. But the song – winner of the inauguralfor “Best African Music Performance” – was also a straight-up hymn to sensuality, in which the narrator compares romantic infatuation to running out of breath.
“Water” was both frisky and ferocious – a balancing act Tyla repeats on her gripping self-titled debut album. Raised in Johannesburg, the 22-year-old draws on her native city’s rich tradition of melodic house music, a genre known as amapiano. Those cool vibrations provide a dreamy background filter to this absorbing collection of tear-jerkers and disco thumpers.
Tyla stays on the front foot throughout a record where forward motion is a recurring metaphor. On the haunting “Safer” – think Enya meets– she tells an ex she is better off staying as far away as possible. She goes on to liken true love to a sweet gulp of air on the beautifully stark “Breathe Me” while the semi-acoustic “Butterflies” sees her taking flight and leaving her troubles behind.Earlier this month Tyla revealed she had suffered a “serious injury”, forcing her to postpone her world tour.
