Two Uniteds hungry for success
Marcus Rashford will lead Manchester United’s attack in the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle United this evening.Money can’t buy you love, the Beatles once famously sang. But can it buy you the Carabao Cup? This is what football fans are asking themselves ahead of today’s final between the two Uniteds of Newcastle and Manchester.
They also played regular Champions League football in the late 1990s and early 2000s, and were awarded the 2006 Uefa Intertoto Cup, as they were the only club that entered the competition to advance to the round of the last 32 in the Uefa Cup.Since then, they have watched as the big five of English football have dominated, winning most of the trophies while the rest of the teams were – in effect – waiting for scraps to fall from the table.
The former Bafana striker has been widely credited with being an important part of the team’s success story this season, especially with taking England international Marcus Rashford to a new level. Newcastle coach Eddie Howe has no injury concerns, though he will go into today’s final without regular goalkeeper Nick Pope after the England international was sent off in Newcastle’s 2-0 home defeat against Liverpool last weekend.
Once considered one of the best German goalkeepers, the now 29-year-old was brought to England by Jürgen Klopp, who hoped that he would bring an end to Liverpool’s goalkeeping problems.That hope came crashing down in the Ukraine capital of Kyiv in the final of the 2018 Champions League, when two mistakes cost Liverpool the game against Real Madrid.
